Bookshelf Spacing

Paperbacks – 10" (25 cm) between shelves. Mass-market paperbacks are about 7" tall; trade paperbacks are 8–9".
Hardcovers – 12" (30 cm). Most hardcovers are 9–11" tall.
Vinyl Records – 13–14" (33–36 cm). LP jackets are 12.4" square, so shelves also need to be at least 13" deep.
Oversized Books – 14–15" (36–38 cm) for art and coffee-table books, or lay them flat in stacks.
Tips
- Depth – 10–12" (25–30 cm) fits most books; go 13"+ (33 cm) for records.
- Max Span – Keep 3/4" solid wood shelves to about 36" (91 cm) between supports to avoid sagging; go shorter for very heavy loads.
- Headroom – Leave 1–2" (2.5–5 cm) above the tallest item so it slides out easily. Shelf height = tallest item + 1–2". Adjustable shelves let the spacing change with your collection.
