How to Measure for a Dining Table

Clearance – Leave at least 36" (91 cm) between the table edge and the wall or nearest furniture so chairs can pull out. Allow 42–48" (107–122 cm) where people need to walk behind seated guests.
Per Person – Plan on 24" (61 cm) of table edge per seat, or about 30" (76 cm) for more elbow room or armchairs.
Seat to Tabletop – Allow 10–12" (25–30 cm) between the chair seat and the tabletop. Standard dining tables are 28–30" (71–76 cm) tall; dining chair seats are 17–19" (43–48 cm).
Quick Math – Room size minus 72" = max table size. Subtract 72" (183 cm) from your room’s length and width to find the largest table that leaves 36" on every side.
