Design details

A chest coffee table in solid walnut, built by hand in our Vancouver workshop. The lid lifts to reveal a deep storage space for throws, pillows and board games, and when it's closed it reads as one simple, solid block. It's sized for a sofa or loveseat of about 70–80 in, it also works at the foot of a bed, and its quiet lines suit minimalist, Scandinavian and Japandi rooms. Walnut is a rich, dark brown hardwood with a smooth, flowing grain that mellows to a warmer brown over time.

It measures 46 in long × 19 in deep × 16 in high (117 × 48 × 41 cm) and weighs about 67 lb (30 kg). The storage space inside is about 43 in long, 16 in deep and 13 in high (109 × 41 × 33 cm).

The lid is 1.25 in thick solid walnut and the box is 3/4 in solid walnut, all from North American mills, with no MDF, plywood or veneer. The corners are mitred, so no end grain shows. Four small walnut keys set across each corner add strength. The lid overhangs the box by 3/4 in on every side, so its edge works as the handle and there are no knobs or pulls. Soft-close lid stays lower it gently and hold it open on their own. We aim to grain match the boards in the lid, the edges are square with a light softening, and the design leaves room for the wood to move with the seasons.

We finish it with Rubio Monocoat, a natural, non-toxic hardwax oil that protects the wood and brings out its grain and colour. If it ever picks up a mark, you can touch up just that spot, and we include a little extra finish for that, along with felt feet to protect your floors. For extra protection against water, stains and scratches, we can add a ceramic coating to the lid on request.

It arrives fully assembled. You just clip the lid onto its hinges.

We make it to order in 4–6 weeks, or 6–8 weeks for a custom size, and ship it free across Canada and the US. In Metro Vancouver, we'll deliver and set it up for free, and elsewhere white glove delivery is available at extra cost. It comes with our 5 year warranty and 30 day return policy.

Outside Metro Vancouver, no. Your coffee table ships by UPS or Canada Post, so it's delivered like any other package.

In Metro Vancouver, we deliver and assemble it ourselves, at a time that suits you.

What if I want to be home to accept delivery?

Please leave us a note when placing your order and we will indicate that a signature is required to deliver the coffee table

Can I order delivery with assembly?

Yes. In Metro Vancouver, we deliver and assemble every piece for free. Elsewhere, we can quote white glove delivery; the price depends on the piece and your address.

Do I need to book my elevator?

If your coffee table ships by UPS or Canada Post, you shouldn't need to. In Metro Vancouver, we deliver at a time that suits you, so you can book it ahead if your building requires it. Please reach out if you'd like to discuss your order.

Is there any MDF or plywood in the chest coffee table?

We only use solid wood, there is no MDF, plywood or otherwise veneered wood

What kind of finish is used?

We use Rubio Monocoat, a natural hardwax oil finish that offers protection without VOCs. It is Food Contact Compliant and GREENGUARD Gold certified. You can find more information on Rubio Monocoat's certifications here.

Is the finish safe for pets and children?

Yes, we use a non-toxic finish that is food safe and has 0% VOCs, more information on the finish and its certifications.

Are any chemicals used in the construction?

No, our coffee tables are built with solid wood then finished with a natural hard wax oil that is non-toxic and VOC free.

Are there any visible fasteners?

No. The corners are mitred and reinforced with small walnut keys, so there are no screws or fasteners on the outside.

How does the lid open?

The lid overhangs the box by 3/4 in on every side, so you lift it by its edge, with no knobs or pulls. Soft-close lid stays lower it gently and hold it open on their own.

Is the lid grain matched?

Yes, we strive to grain match the lid as best as possible though please note that every piece of wood is unique and therefore uniformity is not guaranteed.
