Design details

A farmhouse bench in solid red oak, built by hand in our Vancouver workshop. Its thick, square legs and exposed wedged tenons give it a sturdy, crafted look, and it works as seating at a dining table, in an entryway or at the foot of a bed. Red oak is a warm, light brown hardwood with a bold, open grain and a subtle reddish tone.

It measures 48 in long × 14 in deep × 18 in high (122 × 36 × 46 cm), a comfortable seat height for a standard dining table, and weighs about 43 lb (20 kg). The top is 1.25 in thick solid red oak from North American mills and the legs are a substantial 2.5 in thick, with no MDF, plywood or veneer. At each end, a rail just under the top passes through both legs, and each tenon is locked with a wedge that shows on the outside of the leg. A centre rail runs the length of the bench, and the construction leaves room for the wood to move with the seasons. The edges are square with a light softening.

We finish it with Rubio Monocoat, a natural, non-toxic hardwax oil that protects the wood and brings out its grain and colour. If it ever picks up a mark, you can touch up just that spot, and we include a little extra finish for that, along with felt feet to protect your floors.

It goes together in under 20 minutes, and we include everything you need.

We make it to order in 4–6 weeks, or 6–8 weeks for a custom size, and ship it free across Canada and the US. In Metro Vancouver, we'll deliver and assemble it for free, and elsewhere white glove delivery is available at extra cost. It comes with our 5 year warranty and 30 day return policy.

Shipping

When will the bench arrive?

We build every bench by hand in Vancouver and deliver it within 4–6 weeks.

Does the farmhouse bench ship to the US?

Yes, we offer free shipping to the United States and Canada on all of our furniture, including the farmhouse bench

Do I need to be home to accept delivery?

Outside Metro Vancouver, no. Your bench ships by UPS or Canada Post, so it's delivered like any other package.

In Metro Vancouver, we deliver and assemble it ourselves, at a time that suits you.

What if I want to be home to accept delivery?

If your bench ships by UPS or Canada Post, leave us a note when placing your order and we'll ask for a signature on delivery. In Metro Vancouver, we always deliver in person.

Can I order delivery with assembly?

Yes. In Metro Vancouver, we deliver and assemble every piece for free. Elsewhere, we can quote white glove delivery; the price depends on the piece and your address.

Do I need to book my elevator?

If your bench ships by UPS or Canada Post, you shouldn't need to. In Metro Vancouver, we deliver at a time that suits you, so you can book it ahead if your building requires it. Please reach out if you'd like to discuss your order.

Bench construction

Where is the farmhouse bench built?

Our benches are made in our Vancouver workshop

What type of wood is used in the farmhouse bench?

The entire bench, seat and legs, is made out of solid red oak

Is there any MDF or plywood in the farmhouse bench?

We only use solid wood, there is no MDF, plywood or otherwise veneered wood

What kind of finish is used?

We use Rubio Monocoat, a natural hardwax oil finish that offers protection without VOCs. It is Food Contact Compliant and GREENGUARD Gold certified. You can find more information on Rubio Monocoat's certifications here.

Is the finish safe for pets and children?

Yes, we use a non-toxic finish that is food safe and has 0% VOCs, more information on the finish and its certifications.

Are any chemicals used in the construction?

No, our benches are built with solid wood then finished with a natural hard wax oil that is non-toxic and VOC free.

Are there any visible fasteners?

There are no visible screws. The legs join the aprons under the seat with bridle joints, which are left exposed as part of the design.

Is the seat grain matched?

Yes, we strive to grain match as best as possible though please note that every piece of wood is unique and therefore uniformity is not guaranteed.

Is the wood kiln dried?

Yes, the wood in all of our furniture, including the farmhouse bench, is kiln dried

Maintenance

How should I clean the bench?

Wipe up spills with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Avoid harsh cleaners—use mild soap and water if needed.

Can the bench be in direct sunlight?

Constant direct sun exposure will change the colour of the wood but not the integrity of the bench itself.

Can the bench be refinished?

Yes the finish we use (Rubio Monocoat) is intended to make any repairs simple: lightly sand and reapply oil to worn areas if needed
