Assembly overview
Our bookcases are assembled by connecting the panels as illustrated here. Each connection is reinforced with the provided wood glue.
Why wood glue?
We know it’s a little unconventional to use wood glue but here’s why we do:
- It creates a very strong bond, usually stronger than the wood itself
- It allows for a seamless, minimalist look
The result being a long lasting piece of furniture without any visible hardware.
Types of panels
Sides
2 x Bottom sides (B)
Short tenons on the bottom and long tenons on the top
2 x Middle sides (M)
Long tenons on top and no tenons below
2 x Top sides (T)
Short tenons on top and no tenons below
5 x Short sides (S)
Short tenons on top and bottom
Order of panels
Refer to the diagram below for the placement of your 4 side types. All sides of a certain type are interchangeable, we recommend making the side you like most prominent.
Snapping together
Some pieces will include black "snaps" that pull the bookcase together. Simply apply some force to snap these pieces together.
Note: once snapped, pieces can be difficult to separate so please remove the snaps if you'd like to assemble non-permanently. You can always slide the snaps back in once removed.
FAQs
How should I apply wood glue?
As you build your bookcase, squeeze out a line of wood glue onto the unfinished portion of either the side or shelf you're connecting
What is the mallet used for?
The mallet is an optional tool to help you connect the pieces and eliminate any gaps
How should I clean excess wood glue?
A little bit of "squeeze out" is actually good! Use a damp cloth to wipe it off before it dries, usually within 20 minutes.
How should I apply pressure to the glue connections?
We recommend placing a few heavy books or other objects on your shelves
Do I need to use clamps?
Our bookcases are engineered to use gravity as a natural clamp. Because the vertical panels are stacked between the solid wood shelves, the weight of the unit (and any objects you add) presses the joints together. Just apply the glue, stack the shelves, and let them sit for 24 hours to cure.
How long will the glue take to dry?
We recommend waiting 24 hours before moving the bookcase entirely but you're welcome to start stacking objects immediately (in fact it's encouraged)
How do I attach the brackets?
We recommend using brackets when possible for tall bookcases. You'll want to drill "pilot holes" into both the wood and a stud in your wall, then screw the brackets in. This video can help.
What if I want to take my bookcase apart in the future?
Wood glue is permanent, if you plan to disassemble your bookshelf later, only glue a few sections so it remains easy to take apart.
Should I do a dry assembly?
It's a good idea to assemble a portion of your bookcase without glue first then assemble it with glue once you're comfortable with the process
How do I care for my piece?
Wipe off any spills with a damp rag and avoid harsh cleaners. For tougher spills, you can use Rubio Monocoat's official surface care
What do I do with the sample of finish?
This extra finish is only needed if you'd like to refinish a portion of your piece down the road. For example, if the piece is scratched. It is not needed initially.
